F/A-18 Hornet’s Revenge #3. Out of the pages of Operation Enduring Freedom to free Afghanistan from the yoke of Taliban oppression come these two Bugs from CVW-17 on the USS George Washington (CVN-73) during their July-Dec 2002 combat cruise. The first bird is an F/A-18C flown by CDR R. P. Carpenter of the VFA-83 Rampagers. The standard TPS low-viz scheme features the name "Avery’s Aviator" and bomb mission markings on the nose. The second F/A-18C is the VFA-34 Blue Blasters CAG bird (in color but rather subdued markings) with CAPT Dana "Smudge" Potts name on the canopy rail. Both jets flew combat in Afghanistan and Iraq during this cruise.

F/A-18 Hornet’s Revenge #2. The first F/A-18C is the famous "Still Flying Strong,’ with CAPT Bill Gortney’s name on the canopy rail, VFA-131. The second F/A-18C is "Operation Enduring Freedom," also with CAPT Bill Gortney’s name on the canopy rail, VFA-136. Both were CVW-7 CAG birds, USS John F. Kennedy, Winter 2002-2003.

F/A-18 Hornet’s Revenge #4. Special colorful markings for Operation Iraqi Freedom abound in this decal set covering two combat birds with mission markings! VFA-15 Valions’ F/A-18C CAG bird with CAPT David Newland’s name on the canopy rail also sports a full color "Don’t Tread On Me" Continental Army flag on the nose. Interestingly, this plane flew combat missions with the air refueling probe door removed due to problems with the door itself. CDR Tom "Walli" Lalor, skipper of the VFA-105 Gunslingers, flew the second F/A-18C during the war. Both bomb mission markings and the nose art slogans "Give ‘Em Hell" and "Warhead On Foreheads" decorate this jet.

F/A-18 Hornet’s Revenge #6. This set covers two very colorful, although perhaps lesser known, Hornets based at NAS Oceana. My favorite non-combat Hornet-by far-is the CAG F/A-18D of the VFA-106 Gladiators, which was part of the RAG. In additional to the attactive insignia and blue markings, since this was a RAG bird it had "NAVY" and "ROMAN EMPIRE" painted on the left side, and "MARINES" and "GLADIATORS" on the right side! What an eye-catcher! As the CAG bird, CAPT "SHOE" Shoemaker’s name was on the canopy rail. The other jet is the CAG bird from the VFA-37 Bulls and features colorful red markings over its TPS scheme and squadron commander CDR Jeff Dodson’s name on the canopy rails. Note the fuselage star and bar, which is much smaller than standard for a Hornet.

Next is the VFA-115 Eagles’ skipper’s F/A-18E with CDR Jeff Penfield’s name on the canopy rail and coded NK/201.
