Tuesday, 17 March is the famous “Saint Patrick’s Day” honoring the primary patron saint of Ireland. It’s celebrated in most of the English-speaking world, and wherever the Irish have emigrated over the centuries (which is pretty much everywhere). Certainly it’s celebrated by Guiness Stout drinkers wherever they may be! Éire go Brách (Erin Go Bragh)!

Just for fun I decided to pull together all the 1/48 & 1/32 Irish-themed decal schemes still available (after all, "Klaus" is an ancient Irish name . . . well, maybe not). The couple of 1/72 sets I did with Irish-related markings are sold out and not listed here.

F-8 Crusader Part 4. ONLY THREE TEN SETS LEFT I love it when Hasegawa steals artwork from aftermarket decals companies (NOT!). Our decal was released long before the Hasegawa boxed version, and their decals exactly overlay ours (duh!). In any case, our decals are much thinner and result in a painted-on look that Hasegawa can never hope to attain on this French Navy F-8E(FN), Flottille 12 F in the astounding "Donald Duck" retirement scheme. The second bird is a Trip Trey F-8E from VMF(AW)333, MCAS Yuma, AZ. March 1967, and sports the triple shamrock unit insignia at the top of the fin.

Yoxford Boys P-51s #2. First is the famous "Moose" P-51D-20-NA, G4*S Bar, 362 FS, 357 FG, 44-63221, flown by Lt Myron Becraft. We were able to determine from color photos that not only was the moose head dark blue, it was actually two-tone blue! Next is Lt Gilbert O’Brien’s "Shanty Irish," P-51B-5-NA, G4*O, 362 FS, 357 FG, 43-6787.Tom Hayes’ P-51-15-NA, "Frenesi," C5*N, 364 FS, 357 FG, 44-13318, had an interesting name. During WW II, most aircraft names "Frenesi" were intended to be pronounced as "free-and-easy," a joke about the airmens’ hopes of the attitude of the local girls. However, Hayes was adamant that his "Frenesi" was to be pronounced "fren-nez-zey" because there was nothing "free-and-easy" about combat with the Luftwaffe over Germany. The final bird is P-51B-7-NA, "Hurry Home Honey," C5*T, 364 FS, 357 FG, 43-6935, Lt Richard Peterson. We’re quite proud of the fact that our three Yoxford Boys decal sets have been universally acknowledged to be the most accurate of any ever produced. Exhaustively researched, we were aided by several former Yoxford Boys who made their photos available to us.

Dashing Fw 190 Doras #1. One of the very best late-war fighters, we now know the Dora also wore some of the most unusual and interesting camouflage and markings schemes in the Luftwaffe. The first ship in this set is Fw 190D-9, Red 3+-, of II./JG 6 discovered by the 7th Armored Division in Halle in 1945. You’ll note the strangely painted cowl and the overpainted previous tactical marking "7." Dating from mid 1944, the second Fw 190D-9 is Yellow 4 + I of III./JG 54, with a lucky (hopefully to him) shamrock and name "Bums" painted under the canopy. Painted out prior tactical markings are also visible on Fw 190D-9, Blue 9 + – of II./JG 6 discovered by the 69th Infantry Division at Halle in 1945. Ofw Heinz Marquardt flew the Fw 190D-9 marked White 11 + ~ while he was with 13./JG 51 in Germany at the very end of the war. Note the unpainted under cowl panel and replacement gun cover directly in front of the windscreen.
