F9F-2 & XF9F Panther Hot Cats On Parade #3. MULTIPLE SHEET SET! Panthers painted in anything except Glossy Sea Blue make remarkable modeling subjects, so we created this set for you. The first bird is a Light Gull Gray over Insignia White candy-striped jet from ATU-206 at NAS Pensacola in 1956. Since the bright markings on the unit’s birds were hand-painted (or at least hand-masked), EVERY plane had slightly different markings! This one carries the red nose swoosh, fin, broad underbelly stripe, and twin topside stripes, as well as red candy stripes painted over the Light Gull Gray/White tip tanks. As you know, all the Panther prototypes were unpainted natural metal, which makes for some very interesting models indeed! And yes, all the XF9F-2 and XF9F-3 prototypes had leaping panthers painted on the noses, but the artwork and layout differed (of course you get all the variations here). Oh, and remember the F9F-2 and F9F-3 were externally identical, differing only in the engine fitted. Personally, I’ve never wanted to build the same model/markings everybody else is, and this set is a great way to break free from the pack.
