Ju 88 Wrecks At Benghazi

During my research in the National Archives for more material on the Ploesti, Romania, oil refineries low-level bombing mission, I came across an original 8″ x 10″ print of this wrecked Ju 88s at the Benina Main airfield occupied by several of the USAAF bomb groups that attacked Ploesti. Don’t know whether it’s been published before, but I think it’s pretty cool and hope you enjoy seeing it.

Look closely and you’ll see where GIs attempted to cut the Luftwaffe insignia off the bomber, but apparently abandoned the attempt as too difficult. Looks kinda cool, though.

FYI, although it’s a completely different airframe, I have a few sets left for this is captured (actually a surrendered Royal Romanian Air Force) Ju 88:

CED48222 Ju 88D-1/Trop “American Flag”. Ju 88D-1/Trop (Ju 88D-3) Formerly Rumanian Air Force, delivered to the Allies on 22 July 22 1943 (slightly more than a week prior to the famous low-level B-24 raid on Ploesti). Huge American flags on tail, fuselage top, and wings! This is the Ju 88 currently displayed at the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio.
