Our fellow modeler (make that “Master Modeler“) Ruben Torres as scored again with his gorgeous 1/48 P-51D Passion Wagon (you’ll recall Ruben’s utterly stunning 1/48 A-20H Miss Behaven with complete scratch-built interior). If I’m half as good a modeler as Ruben “when I grow” up my life will have been successful! He used my PYN-up Decals for both Passion Wagon and Miss Behaven, but it’s his modeling skill that really grabs your attention.

PYN-up Decals Stunning ‘Stangs P-51s #2. This set features two Yoxford Boys P-51Ds and our remarkable PYN-up nose art decals. First is the very famous P-51D-5-NA, 44-13691, “Passion Wagon,” G4*A, 362 FS/357 FG, 1944. We’ve included TWO VARIATIONS in the markings to correctly portray the ship when it was flown first by Lt. Arval Roberson and also when it was flown later by Capt Clarence Weaver. Interesting note on the nose art: we had a couple of pretty good photos to work from, but both were taken at fairly acute angles so we had to extrapolate the exact shape of the artwork. Long after the decal was produced, I came across an excellent photo showing the nose art from a near 90 degree angle (boy, I woulda killed for that pic while we were working on our artwork because it would have saved many, many hours of hard work). The best news is that we got the shape right; I’ll publish the photo in an upcoming book so you can see what I mean. The second Mustang is less well known, but carried extremely large (for a P-51) and well-done nose art. This ship is P-51D-10-NA, “Temptation,” 357 FG/362 FS, Lt Matthew Martin, Leiston, England, Late 1944.

P-51 Big Stud Ponies Part 1. First is P-51D-20-NA, 44-63607, Lt. Col. Glenn Eagleston (16.5 confirmed kills in WW II & two MiG-15 kills in Korea), FT*L, 353rd FS, 354th FG, including a very accurate swooping eagle insignia based on extremely good photos (and QUITE different from the marking the Trumpeter kit). The second is P-51D-20-NA, Man O’ War, 44-14292, Col. Claiborne “Zoot” Kinnard, QP*A, 355th FG, displaying 15 kills on the canopy frame. Only 23 sets still available.

Yoxford Boys Mustangs #3. MULTIPLE SHEET SET. First is P-51-15-NA, “Frenesi,” C5*N, 364 FS, 357 FG, 44-13318, flown by Lt Col Tom Hayes. The second subject is P-51D-10-NA, “Old Crow,” 44-14450, Capt. Clarence ‘Bud’ Anderson, 362nd FS, 357th FG. Both aircraft wore field-applied camouflage, probably RAF Dark Green (see the instructions for a much longer discussion on the colors).
P-51D Big Stud Ponies Part 2. First is the P-51D flown by Robin Olds, “SCAT VII” in the correct ORANGE color (not red as sometimes depicted) with 21 kill markings, L2*W, 434th FS, 479TH FG. NOTE: this artwork was based on Gen Olds photos and confirmed for us by Gen Olds. The second is the P-51D-5-NA, “Happy Jack’s Go Buggy,” MC*O with the correct mixture of code letters and kill markings, flown by Jack M. Ilfrey, 79th FS, 20th FG, 8th AF, 1944. The markings on this bird evolved over time and have confused many artists and decal companies. Ilfrey’s markings on his ‘D’ evolved over time. In most cases, it has been shown incorrectly with early cowl markings and late fuselage markings. When it had the mission markings and red/yellow name on the cowl is was coded MC-O. Later, it had the 20th FG’s black & White cowl stripes added covering the previous cowl markings, and the name was repainted in black/yellow. Around this time the aircraft code was changed from ‘O’ to ‘I’, with the ‘O’ being painted out with a light gray paint.

PYN-up Decals P-51 Pretty Fillies Part 2. This set has gone on eBay for over $250! Here you get two of the most famous Mustangs ever. First is Arval Roberson’s P-51D-5-NA, 44-13691, Passion Wagon, coded G4*A. In fact, you get TWO variations, Roberson’s original and the changed markings when Capt Clarence Weaver took her over after Roberson completed his combat tour. They both flew with the 362 FS/357 FG in late 1944. The second bird was made famous by the publishing of a very pretty color photo of the nose art in numerous publications during the 1980s and 1990s. It is Lt Arthur Bower’s P-51D-20-NA, 44-63223, Sweet Arlene, coded QP*S. He flew as part of the 334 FS/4 FG, February, 1945, Debden, England. We even give you a painting mask for the red nose. Reviewers have acknowledged this is the most accurate decal, by far, ever created for Passion Wagon and Sweet Arlene.

Zirkus Rosarius Part 1. The Versuchsverband (the Trials and Research Unit of the Luftwaffe High Command) flew and assessed the capabilities of captured Allied fighters, and toured these aircraft to various Luftwaffe fighter units as the “Wanderzirkus (or Beute-Zirkus) Rosarius.” The aircraft tested by them included P-51s, P-38s, P-47s, Spitfires, Mosquitos and a Typhoon. This set features a Mosquito B.IV coded T9+XB, 2./VVB OKL, based at Königsberg, Neumark, July 1944. Next is the P-47D-2-RA formerly YF*U of the 358 FS/355 FG and now coded T9+FK, 2./VVB OKL, Wunstorf, July 1944. The final ship is the remarkable P-51B formerly from the 334 FS/4 FG and now coded T9+HK, 2./VVB OKL, Neuruppin, late 1944. This unusual scheme consisted of natural metal over RLM 04 yellow rather than the typical topside color of RLM 74.
Zirkus Rosarius Part 2. This set includes markings for THREE schemes on TWO aircraft. The first is P-51B T9+CK, in a very colorful scheme of overall natural metal except for RLM 04 yellow undersides and tail, 2./VVB OKL, Summer 1944. The second aircraft is the famous P-47D-2-RA “Beetle” YF*U, flown by 2nd. Lt. William Roach of the 358th FS, 355th FG, and landed intact in occupied Europe on 7 November 1943. The first scheme is Roach’s original USAAF markings and the second scheme depicts the same ship after being partially repainted by the Luftwaffe (2./VVB OKL), Wunstorf, in July 1944, with overpainted US insignia and a RLM 04 yellow cowl ring and rudder added. Note the Germans RETAINED the original “Beetle” nose art! A third scheme of overall RLM74/04 is covered separately on our decal set CED48256, Zirkus Rosarius Part 1 (not currently available).

Mustang Nose Art Aces. P-51D-20-NA, “Ridge Runner III,” 44-72308, Maj. Pierce McKennon, 335th FS, 4th FG; P-51D-15-NA, “Glamorous Glen III,” 44-14888, Capt. Charles Yeager, 363rd FS, 357th FG; P-51D-20-NA, 44-63607, Lt. Col. Glenn Eagleston, 353rd FS, 354th FG. This is Eagleston’s famous fighter with the huge eagle painted in front of the left side canopy, and you’ll note the size, shape, and details of the eagle are MUCH different than the one provided in the Trumpeter kit. These make breathtaking markings in this scale.
