THUD

Two interesting bits of F-105 Thunderchief information crossed my desk recently, and you may like them too. (I have no financial interest in either the book (which I also do NOT sell) or Youtube video, but of course the decal sets listed after them are my own.)

First, My good friends Bert Kinzey and Jim Rotramel have released a new Detail & Scale book on the F-105.  Bert is the publisher and author, and Jim created some of the scale drawings for the book.

Thanks to Mick Roth, the book also includes important information on the F-105F/G Wild Weasels in addition to all the other great Thud information and photos.  These are good guys who know what they’re talking about and I think you’ll find the book very useful.

From Bert’s press release:

  • Development & operational history
  • All variants covered, with special emphasis on the F-105F and F-105G Wild Weasels
  • “Arming the Thunderchief” with photos and illustrations
  • Complete modelers section

The book is available in print and a couple of digital formats:

  • Print  (or Bert Kinzey for all the Detail & Scale books)
  • Kindle
  • Apple ePub (app store for iPad and iPhone only) Search for “F-105 Detail and Scale” and it should come up.  I don’t use this so let me know if this search is wrong.

Or, for more information, go to www.detailandscale.com.

Second, I was delighted when my Youtube feed highlighted a video interview with former Thud driver Vic Vizcarra, the guy who brought us the AMAZING (and hilarious) “Pussy Galore*” and Pussy Galore II” nose art  (inspired by James Bond, and…uh…fighter pilot humor) on two Thuds he flew in Vietnam.

Probably because of Youtube’s infamous censorship he doesn’t mention the nose art in this interview, but does give an interesting account of his time in Vietnam, including being shot down.

Vic appears in several other Youtube vids about his time as a military pilot flying Thuds and Huns in Vietnam:

As it happens, I produced 1/48 and 1/32 decals for Vic’s two “Pussy Galore” jets.  One is for his camo jet and the other for the silver-painted jet (remember, “natural metal” F-105s were actually painted silver).  The 1/48 sets are completely sold out, but I have a few of the 1/32 sets still available (yes, these are my own products, as opposed to the plugs I give for no financial interest to other goodies in my various notes and pages).

And still in 1/32, following the same theme but not flown by Vizcarra, F-105G Jinkin Josie and F-105D Cherry Girl:
