Description
Early Messerschmitts Bf 109s #2. This set showcases four famous early 109s. First is the Bf 109 B-1 flown by Wilhelm Staege in the Spanish Civil War as part of 2.J/88 and based at Alar d’ el Rey in August 1937. Note that the “top hat” insignia on each Bf 109 during the war was hand painted and therefore they were each different! Next is the night fighter Bf 109 D-1, White N+7, 10.(N)/JG 26, Johannes “Macki” Steinhoff (who eventually scored 176 victories including some in the Me 262), Norway, Jever, 1940. The final subject is another Norway bird, but sporting a different style of markings Bf 109 D-1 night fighter, Yellow N+11, 12.(N)/JG 2, Norway, 1940.
