Description
Fw 190 Butcher Birds Over Czechland #2. When JaPo published their seminal book Luftwaffe Over Czech Territory 1945 a few years ago, we were treated to a ton of fascinating and never-before-seen Luftwaffe paint and markings schemes. This set, second in our series, showcases five stunning Fw 190s. First is an Fw 190 F-8 of St.III/SG 10, Chevron Green 2 I, based at Stankov, West Bohemia. Note the “busy” dappled overpainting of the topside camouflage, as well as the yellow nose band, rudder, and underwing “V.” The second ship is another F-8 also from St.III./SG 10, Chevron Green 5 I. Based at Dolni Kaminice, the entire rear fuselage was overpainted by hand in what was probably RLM 70, obscuring all previous camouflage and markings except the fuselage cross. The third plane was based at Hradec Kralove and was an Fw 190 F-8 from II./SG 4 nicknamed “Erni,” White 3 Bar. Note the overall RLM 76 aft fuselage/fin, which was clearly a replacement unit. A fine example of late-war concealment practices, F-8 Yellow 11 Bar of 6./SG 4. Note the heavy dappling of what was most probably late war “80” series colors and the painted out previous tactical markings. The final bird is the extremely weathered Fw 190 F-8 of 5./SG 77 Black 7 Bar. Based at Pardubice, it featured a large yellow lightning bolt on the cowling and carried Panzerschreck rockets under the wings.
