Description
P-40B/C Tomahawks. Flying Tiger R. T. Smith, Flight Leader 3rd. PS, American Volunteer Group, flew the first subject in this set, a Hawk 81-A-2 (P-40B), from Kunming in January 1942. You’ll note the five kill markings, 3rd squadron “Hell’s Angels” insignia and red fuselage stripe. Another Flying Tiger, Tommy Haywood flew Hawk 81-A-2 (P-40B) #94 with the 3rd. PS, American Volunteer Group, Kunming, 1942. Note Haywood’s three kill markings and completely different style of sharkmouth from Smith’s ship. Our decal set includes separate sharkmouths to fit the Hobbycraft and Trumpeter kits. Lt. S. G. Ridnyi, Commander, 126th IAP, flew AH965 during the desperate defense of Moscow. The white winter topside camouflage is expected, but the large British serial number painted on top of the white is not! The final subject was a Pearl Harbor defender. It was a P-40C of the 78th PS, 8th PG, Bellows Field, Hawaii, December 1941. Note the huge “300” stenciled on the fuselage sides! Obviously we’ve included the correct black “U. S. ARMY” underwing markings-yes, they were usually Insignia Blue, but have been definitely documented as black on P-40s by Dana Bell and others.
