F-14 Tomcat Sunset #2. This set showcases the two significant VF-31 Tomcatters birds that participated in the Tomcat Sunset (official retirement of the F-14 from the Fleet) celebration held at NAS Oceana on September 18, 2006. First is the hi-viz Skipper’s Bird AJ/101 featuring a flamboyant red tail and black spine, marked for CDR Jim ‘Puck’ Howe, the final commanding officer. The second bird is Modex 103 with a gray tail (no tail code), but featuring the special “Grumman/US Navy’s Last Fighter 1970-2006” full color logos on the fins. Marked for LCDR Greg Knepper, both birds wore the standard TPS gray scheme.
