Description
P-47D Special. The first ship in this HUGE multiple decal sheet set is Col. David C. Schilling’s famous P-47D-25-RE bubbletop, 42-26641, “Hairless Joe.” The nose art was painted on the cowling, although the name never was. This artwork was a slightly smaller and less elaborate version of the “Hairless Joe” art Schilling had painted on the nose of his P-47D razorback. The decals in this set include the proper markings for the early and later versions of this paint scheme with the repainted “S” and serial number, as well as Schilling’s seldom-photographed final, full kill score markings! This plane was from the 56th FG, Boxted, late 1944. The second ship in this set is Lt Frank Oiler’s famous P-47D-28-RA, 42-28878, “Eileen.” This bubbletop was Oiler’s second “Eileen” and the nose art and name were somewhat different from his earlier P-47D razorback. One photo of this plane in service clearly shows that NO upper left wing US star and bar insignia was applied, at least at the time of the photo. This bird was assigned to the 78 FG/84 FS in 1944. This large three-decal-sheet set is the result of extensive research (as are all Cutting Edge Decals) and contains all markings, including full stenciling.
