Description
Early Messerschmitt Bf 109s #1. There’s just something about those late-’30s monoplane fighters that conveys the feeling of great technological power emerging from the early childhood of aviation. The first two subjects in this set are extremely famous Spanish Civil War combatants. First is the Bf 109 D-1, 6-79, flown by Hptm Werner Moelders, Staffelkapitaen 3.J/88, Legion Condor, November, 1938. This is famous “Luchs” (lynx) bird with the colorful Mickey Maus (Mickey Mouse) character painted aft of the cockpit and displaying his first three aerial kill markings. The second is the Bf 109 B-2, 6-30, flown by Uffz Wilhelm Staege, 2.J/88, Legion Condor, Alar d’ el Rey, August, 1937. When you carefully study photos of Legion Condor 109s you notice the markings were hand-painted on each aircraft, meaning they are different (and often very different) from plane to plane. Look at the rudder crosses on the Moelders and Staenge ships. You can see they have different strokes (line width) and the top arm crossed the rudder outline in different places. This set provides markings specifically matched to each individual plane. The final subject is a famous immediate pre-war Luftwaffe machine with special markings for the invasion of Czechoslovakia. It is Bf 109 D-1, White 3, flown by Lt Hermann Reifferscheidt, 1./JG 131, March, 1939.
