Description
PYN-up Decals P-51 Pretty Fillies #4. My good friend “Eagle Eye” Mike Lampros, who passed away unexpectedly last week (see my tribute link on the right side of this page), harangued me to do proper artwork for P-51B-15-NA “Berlin Express,” then did much of the research himself. This ship was Lt Bill Overstreet’s mount while in the 357 FG/363 FS, at Leiston, England in the Fall of 1944. Actually his second “Berlin Express,” Overstreet inherited this plane from Bud Anderson (it had been his second “Old Crow”), and applied his own artwork and nickname. This bird even carried Anderson’s whitewall tires until they were replaced with normal tires! The large red dragon riding a P-51 on the right side of the nose can be seen from hundreds of yards away. Bill Overstreet passed away at age 92 on December 29th, 2013. See a story about his exploits here. The second Yoxford Boy in this set is the lesser-known (but stunning) P-51D-20-NA, “The Tender Terror.” Although pilot Lt Ralph W. Mann of the 357 FG/363 FS didn’t score any victories during the war, he flew on of the most remarkably marked Mustangs of the war. Like Overstreet, Mann was based at Leiston, England, and this scheme dates from January 1945.
